Using Thai on UNIX is similar to other platforms in concept. We need Thai font for reading, writing and printing. We need a method to input Thai from keyboard. We need encoder/decoder for Thai Mail because Thai Character code use the 8th bit. The difficulty of using Thai on UNIX is not only there are many sort of UNIX Operating System but also there are many GUIs (Graphic User Interface) for UNIX such as X Window (MIT), OpenWindow (SUN), OpenGL (SGI) etc. Every GUI has different implementation method of Thai Font for reading, writing and printing. Moreover, it usually requires different font formats.
This document try to write step-by-step instruction to set Thai Language in your system. Becuase of the variety of UNIX and its GUI, it may not work properly with your system. We try to collect an error as much as we can on various systems. However, it still lacks of much information.
