University

At the moment I'm a 4th year student at the University of Technology, Sydney , studying for a combined degree in Telecommunications Engineering and Arts in International Studies, on an exchange to Japan for 1 year studying at the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo as part of the JUSST (Japanese University Studies in Science and Technology) Program.

The University of Technology, Sydney

The main campus of UTS is situated in the Sydney CBD, close to Central Station , with the Markets Campus at Haymarket and the Tower Building at Broadway. There are two semesters each year, Autumn semester beginning in March and finishing at the end of July. Spring semester is from August until the end of November.

Engineering courses at UTS are typically of a 5 year duration with students participating in at least 2 semesters of professional engineering practice, although combined and double degrees will take longer. I have already taken part in my first semester of Industrial Experience, working for Telstra Network Design and Construction, working in the Offshore Design Division, working on putting together tenders for Offshore projects. During this time I also travelled to Indonesia for 2 weeks to work on a project there.

I hope to graduate from uni sometime around 2003, after which time I have no idea what I want to do, I suppose I want to get a job or something, but at the moment I don't have the faintest clue of what sort of job I'll be after. I'll probably have more of an idea after I finish the rest of my Industrial Experience. Until then the plan is to kick back and enjoy the university way of life!! As far as why I chose this course, well I have even less of an idea, I was looking through the UAC guide and thought it looked interesting, plus I could keep studying Japanese, so I applied to get into this course and got in, so here I am.

As far as uni events go, well you can check out this page for info on some of the facilities and clubs and stuff available at UTS.

Most of the activities at UTS involve drinking of some kind:

There are of course a number of other drinking activities organised by the clubs, such as Toga parties and pub crawls. SECSME the engineering society organises events such as Beer & Prawn nights, and the B&S Ball. If you visit their homepage here you can see photos of me and my friends doing drunken stupid stuff.
