Hospitals

There are general hospitals, specialized hospitals, and smaller clinics in Japan. People use a particular medical institution depending on the type and extent of their illness or injury.
It is a good idea to confirm the location, specialized medical departments, and hours and holidays of the clinics in your neighborhood. Many large general hospitals require a letter of introduction and reservations, and you may have to wait some time for a consultation. Smaller clinics in Japan usually do not require reservations, with the exception of many dental clinics.
It is wise to call to confirm in advance if you are planning a visit to a dentist. For slight illnesses and injuries, you can also purchase medicine at drug stores and pharmacies.
Besides the UEC Health Care Center, the following medical institutions are located near the university. We recommend you to go to these clinics or hospitals with someone who is fluent in Japanese, if possible.

Ambulance

For sudden illnesses and serious injuries, call an ambulance by dialling 119 (English-speaking staff available). Ambulances are available free of charge on a 24-hour basis. However, the cost of medical treatment must be personally borne.
If you can still move, be sure to prepare your Residence card (or passport), health insurance card, and an amount of cash ready by the time the ambulance arrives. An ambulance can be recognized by its revolving red light and siren.
Ambulances can be used only in serious cases when in need of emergency medical treatment. If you are unable to judge whether or not an ambulance is necessary, please consult the Tokyo Fire Department Telephone Service (Tel: 042-521-2323; English-speaking staff available).
