Etegami Class, 2010 Cross-Cultural Understanding Seminars #1

On Saturday, June 5, a total of 22 UEC international students took “Etegami* Class,” the first seminar for Cross-cultural Understanding 2010. They were introduced to creating “Rakkan**” personal seals curved out of rubber erasers and illustrated letters, with courteous teaching by Ms. Hanaoka and Ms. Noma, two Sensei and members from Kisuge-no-kai based in Fuchu city. Using Japanese traditional drawing brush, ink and mineral colors, they sketched seasonal flowers, vegetables, or traditional toys with their own interpretations on post cards and by their illustrations added a message to their families or people to whom they are grateful. Hanaoka Sensei gave comments with close attention to each work. A tea party followed the class, and all participants had a great time with this cultural exchanging opportunity.

*Etegami
Etegami is an illustration with a short message drawn on a postcard-sized or bigger paper, which can be used for a seasonal greeting. Japanese prefer to choose a seasonal object for the subject of the illustration. It is valued as a humble attempt to illustrate a moment in everyday life through a subject that has caught your attention and share it with someone you care.
**Rakkan
Rakkan is for your signature to be stamped on your Etegami.
