Yukata Class, 2010 Cross-Cultural Understanding Seminars #2

On Thursday, July 8, nearly 30 UEC international students took a “Yukata* Class”, the 2nd seminar of the 2010 Cross-cultural Understanding Seminars.

Ms. Ohkuma, a Sensei from Sohdoh Kimono Manner School, taught them how to wear Yukata. Wearing Yukata, the students had a little lecture on the simple pleasures of a summer tea party.

Ohkuma Sensei served each participant a bowl of Matcha** tea that she made at the site along with a traditional, seasonal sweet chilled for this occasion. [The lesson and lecture demonstrated for them how Japanese find an enjoyable and comfortable way to spend time during the hot and humid summer season through the senses of touch, smell, taste, eyesight, and hearing.]

In the coming December there will be “Kimono & Tea Ceremony Class” for the 3rd seminar.

*Yukata
Yukata is a casual Kimono made of cotton or hemp and worn usually for summer evening events such as a night bazaar, fireworks display, or stroll in the cool evening breeze.
**Matcha
Matcha is a green tea made of green tea leaves finely milled into a powder and usually served lukewarm in a handcrafted bowl at ceremonial occasions.
